This thesis collection is the result of examining French fashion history through late 18th and 19th century industrialization, and the way in which these transitional periods of human history have shaped the materiality of clothing. Scrutinizing flea market artifacts and archival images, the foundational research of this project investigated surviving garments and their tactual testimonies—the evidence of technique and the imprints of wear. To a Generation Z designer surrounded by the photogenic fetishisms of our time, the quiet integrity and legacy of labour found within such ancient attires was the main influence in the imagining of something new. Garments within the collection make physical citations of history through textile and technique, in the hope of restoring material insight and experiential value into truly contemporary clothing.
